Programs and Community Service

The Brewster VFW Post 672 participates in a number of scholarship competitions, recognition awards and community outreach programs. A few are listed below. Some are for members only, and some are open to the public. Scroll down to see the various things we do.

Memorial Day 2015

Brewster Memorial Day Parade

Each year on Memorial Day, we host a parade that starts at the Brewster Firehouse on North Main Street and ends at Veterans Park (formerly Electrazone Field) on Railroad Avenue.

Summer Picnic for Members & Families

Held at a local park or the Elks Club, this traditional summer picnic is a chance for members of the Post and their guests to get together for some summertime fun, including swimming, BBQ, music and more.

Voice of Democracy Scholarship

Voice of Democracy is an audio essay context for grades 9 - 12. Each year a different topic is chosen by the VFW for each program. Winners at the local post level are presented with a check and a commemorative plaque, and their essay is submitted to the next higher round of judging. Submission due date is November 1st of each year.

Castle Point VA Hospital Summer Picnic

An outdoor picnic for the patients at Castle Point VA Hospital is held by a contingent of VFW members, Boy & Girl Scouts, and other citizens.

The Bob Palmer Project

Leading up to Memorial Day each year, we coordinate the placing of fresh flags on the graves of every veteran interred within the town of Southeast.  We also install brass flag-holders for interred veterans as our budget and manpower allow.

Veterans Day 1 2016

Brewster Veterans Day Ceremony

A ceremony to recognize Veterans is held each Veterans Day in Veterans Park (formerly Electrazone Field) in downtown Brewster.

Teacher of the Year Award

The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics—at least half of the school day in a classroom environment—and promote America’s history, traditions and institutions effectively.

Expanded Horizons Scholarship

Administered through Brewster High School. Awarded to a student who has displayed dedication and outstanding effort toward reaching their future educational goals.

VFW Post 672 Scholarship

Administered through Brewster High School. Awarded to a graduating senior who will pursue a college education and has achieved academic excellence, participated in community service, and displayed initiative toward school projects. In addition, a parent or grandparent must have served overseas as an honorable veteran of the Armed Forces of the US. Student must attach the DD-214 form as documentation of overseas service as it will be validated by the Post #672 scholarship chairperson. The veteran does not need to be a member of VFW Post 672.

Scout of the Year Award

Each year, the VFW selects three young people — of the Boy or Girl Scouts, Sea Scouts or Venturing Crew — who have demonstrated practical citizenship in school, scouting and the community.

Monthly Breakfast Fundraiser

From October to May, we hold a breakfast buffet on the second Sunday of every month. Menu includes an omelet station, scrambled eggs, pancakes, waffles, homefries, bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy, and more. $10 per adult, $5 per teen and kids are free. No reservations required, and all are welcome for this community event.

Patriots Pen Scholarship

Castle Point VA Hospital Christmas Party

The annual Holiday Party for the patients at Castle Point VA Hospital has always been popular. The VFW's visit lets them know that there service to our country is appreciated.
