programs & community outreach

Brewster VFW Post 672 participates in a number of scholarship competitions, recognition awards and community outreach programs.  A few are listed below:

Patriots Pen & Voice of Democracy
Patriots Pen is a written essay contest for grades 6 - 8.  Voice of Democracy is an audio essay context for grades 9 - 12.  Each year a different topic is chosen by the VFW for each program.  Winners at the local post level are presented with a check and a commemorative plaque, and their essay is submitted to the next higher round of judging.  Submission due date is November 1st of each year.

Teacher of the Year
The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics—at least half of the school day in a classroom environment—and promote America’s history, traditions and institutions effectively.

Scout of the Year
Each year, the VFW selects three young people — of the Boy or Girl Scouts, Sea Scouts or Venturing Crew — who have demonstrated practical citizenship in school, scouting and the community.

Brewster VFW Post 672 Scholarship
Administered through Brewster High School.  Awarded to a graduating senior who will pursue a college education and has achieved academic excellence, participated in community service, and displayed initiative toward school projects. In addition, a parent or grandparent must have served overseas as an honorable veteran of the Armed Forces of the US. Student must attach the DD-214 form as documentation of overseas service as it will be validated by the Post #672 scholarship chairperson. The veteran does not need to be a member of VFW Post 672.

Brewster VFW Post 672 Expanded Horizons Scholarship
Administered through Brewster High School.  Awarded to a student who has displayed dedication and outstanding effort toward reaching their future educational goals.

Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony
Each year on Memorial Day, we host a parade that starts at the Brewster Firehouse on North Main Street and ends at Veterans Park (formerly Electrazone Field) on Railroad Avenue.

Veterans Day Ceremony
A ceremony to recognize Veterans is held each Veterans Day in Veterans Park (formerly Electrazone Field) in downtown Brewster.

Castle Point Picnic
An outdoor picnic for the patients at Castle Point VA Hospital is held by a contingent of VFW members, Boy & Girl Scouts, and other citizens.

Castle Point Christmas Party
The annual Holiday Party for the patients at Castle Point VA Hospital has always been popular.  The VFW's visit lets them know that there service to our country is appreciated.

Monthly Breakfast Fundraiser
From October to May, we hold a breakfast buffet on the second Sunday of every month. Menu includes an omelet station, scrambled eggs, pancakes, waffles, homefries, bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy, and more. $10 per adult, $5 per teen and kids are free. No reservations required, and all are welcome for this community event.

Summer Picnic for Post Members & Guests
Held at a local park or the Elks Club, this traditional summer picnic is a chance for members of the Post and their guests to get together for some summertime fun, including swimming, BBQ, music and more.
