VFW Post 672 Donates to Planned Handicapped Trail in Brewster
Brewster VFW Post 672 Commander Arthur Hanley presented a check for $2,500 on Saturday November 18 to Carmel High School students Anna Eisenstein and Krista Gabarro. Under the auspices of the Putnam County Land Trust, Anna and Krista are planning to install a trail for persons who are physically challenged at the Peach Lake Natural Area in Brewster, which is owned by the Land Trust. Their concept is that all persons benefit from being able to access natural areas and physically challenged persons are no exception. For them, getting there is not always possible. After visiting handicap accessible trails in Falls Village and in Danbury Connecticut and meeting with professionals to determine the construction requirements and costs the students have completed plans for the trail and are spending the fall and winter season fund raising. The trail will be called the Lindera Loop Trail to highlight one of the features of the area, a native under story shrub named Lindera benzoin, commonly called Spicebush. The trail will include sitting areas with benches, a butterfly garden and stations for listening to birdcalls. A nature guide including written descriptions of the tree, plant, insect and animal communities located along the trail will also be included.
Anna and Krista have prepared a presentation they are making to local community organizations in an effort to raise the $15,000 the construction materials will cost. The labor to do the actual work will be carried out by volunteers. The first group to respond to their request is the Brewster VFW Post 672. Commander Arthur Hanley joined by Sr. Vice Commander Harry Sherblom and Trustee John Santorelli, said, “Many veterans suffering from disabilities related to war wounds and/or aging, miss being able to go into a forest to enjoy the wonders of nature, it offers to them. This trail, the first of its kind in Putnam County, will open the forest to them. We hope that other groups across the nation will do the same, taking a lesson from what Anna and Krista are doing here in Putnam County Land Trust’s Peach Lake Natural Area.”
PCLT Board President Judith Terlizzi praised the students. “Meeting students who have shown the leadership and dedication that Anna and Krista have, is a privilege. The members of our community who are physically challenged will benefit from having this trail accessible.”
Brewster VFW Post 672 Patriot's Pen & Voice of Democracy Winners
Camille Safadi, eleven years old, a sixth grader at North Salem Middle School was present at our February meeting accompanied by her mother Courtney and her younger brother. We asked Camille to attend to receive a certificate and a check as her prize for her winning essay in the Post’s Patriots Pen contest. Camille’s entry went on to win the Putnam county council contest and placed second in the District 2 contest.
Kerry Casey has done it again. For the third year in a row, this North Salem High School student has taken first place in the Post 672 Voice of Democracy program. Kerry, who just turned seventeen and is in her junior year of high school, is the daughter of Doreen and Dennis Casey. Accompanied by her parents, Kerry was welcomed to the Post at our March meeting, where Sr. Vice-commander Harry Sherblom, the chairman of the VOD program, presented Kerry with a plaque acknowledging her “threepeat” along with a check for $500. Kerry also received a check from the VFW Putnam County Council for placing third at the county level. This is also the third year in a row that Kerry has finished in the top three at the county level. Two years ago she took first place and last she took third place. The question now is, can anybody beat her next year, the final year in which she can enter the contest.
